Part 1 of 2 - Living Room Makeover: Transforming a Space with Style and Personality
A living room makeover is one of the most exciting ways to breathe new life into your home. Whether you're redesigning the space for comfort or simply refreshing your decor, every choice—from furniture to decor pieces—adds a unique touch that reflects your personal style. In this post, we’re sharing part 1 of 2 of an exciting living room transformation that blends modern elegance with timeless charm, using beautiful pieces from our Moffatt Grace Home Collection.
Picking a Paint Colour with Personality
For the room’s colour, we chose Benjamin Moore's Dark Olive, a rich and inviting shade that added depth and warmth without overwhelming the space. Rather than fully colour-drenching the room, we opted to leave the ceiling white, creating a sense of height and openness. The trim, however, was also painted in Dark Olive which helped make a statement.
This approach created a perfect balance, allowing the dark colour to anchor the room while keeping the overall feel light and airy.
Layered Lighting
To create a truly inviting atmosphere, we incorporated layered lighting throughout the space. By combining different sources of light, we were able to enhance both the functionality and the mood of the room. We added subtle library lights to illuminate the bookshelves, bringing attention to the details while creating a cozy, intimate ambiance.
Wall sconces were placed strategically around the room to provide soft, ambient lighting, casting a warm glow on the walls and making the space feel inviting. All of the sconces throughout the room were sourced from J.D. Lighting in Tillsonburg.
Additionally, carefully selected lamps were placed throughout the room. This mix of lighting options not only allowed for flexibility depending on the time of day but also helped to highlight key elements of the design. The result was a space that felt warm, well-lit, and thoughtfully designed.
Art that Speaks to You
Art is one of the most powerful tools in interior design—it has the ability to tell a story, evoke emotions, and bring personality to a room. For this living room, we went with two statement pieces above the sofa. They instantly draw the eye and create a sense of luxury without being overpowering.
We love working with local artists such as Lori Dedato to source art.
Lori created some beautiful exclusive paintings for the Moffatt Grace Home Collection.
Choosing the Perfect Furniture
Furniture is the cornerstone of any living room. For this makeover, we opted for a blend of modern and cozy elements to create a balanced space that's both inviting and stylish.
The focal point of the room is a soft, neutral-toned sofa. Paired with the sofa are sleek, contemporary accent chairs in a subtle beige that add texture and complement the colour scheme.
For the coffee table, we selected a stunning wood piece that was custom made by local furniture maker Rise and Pine. It the perfect combination of elegance and warmth that fits seamlessly with the design. We topped the table with a few curated decor items from the Moffatt Grace Home Collection, including a candle, cloche and book holder as well as one of our pots with faux magnolia stems.
Mantle Styling: Simple Elegance
A fireplace mantle provides the perfect opportunity to showcase a curated selection of decor items. We went for a refined and minimalistic approach, starting with a gold metal frame mirror above the mantle that enhances the room’s openness. The mirror’s clean lines complement the aesthetic of the furniture.
On the mantle itself, we kept it simple yet sophisticated by placing a set of brass candle holders and matches from the Moffatt Grace Home Collection.
A small piece of art by artist Lori Dedato from the Home Collection also sits on the mantle, creating a sense of style and warmth.
We can’t wait to share Part Two of this incredible makeover. Watch for our next blog post with some detailed before and after photos of the whole room.
